
Common Faults of Roll Forming Machines
A color steel roll forming machine may experience mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, or forming-related problems during long-term operation. Understanding the root cause of common failures and applying the correct maintenance method can reduce downtime, improve forming accuracy, and extend equipment service life.
Sheet Deviation During Forming
Sheet deviation is one of the most common problems. It may be caused by incorrect guide roller adjustment, misaligned forming rollers, uneven feeding, or improper machine leveling.
First, stop the machine and check the centerline of the feeding system. Adjust the side guides and forming roller alignment gradually. The coil should enter the machine straight and remain centered throughout the forming process.
Profile Deformation and Wrinkles
If the finished roofing sheet has wrinkles, uneven edges, or an inaccurate profile, possible causes include incorrect roller spacing, excessive forming pressure, damaged rollers, or unsuitable material thickness.
Check each forming station in sequence and verify that the rollers are correctly positioned. Avoid excessive adjustment at one station, as the forming process depends on the coordinated operation of all roller groups.
Abnormal Noise or Vibration
Abnormal noise may indicate loose fasteners, worn bearings, insufficient lubrication, damaged gears, chain problems, or roller misalignment.
The machine should be stopped before inspection. Check bearings, transmission components, shafts, chains, and connecting bolts. Replace severely worn parts and lubricate components according to the manufacturer's maintenance requirements.
Hydraulic Cutting Failure
When the cutting system cannot cut normally, check the hydraulic oil level, hydraulic pressure, pump, valves, cylinder, and electrical control signals.
Insufficient pressure may result from low oil levels, leakage, or hydraulic component wear. If the cylinder operates unevenly, inspect the hydraulic circuit and connections. Cutting blades should also be checked for wear and correct alignment.
Motor Overheating or Failure to Start
Motor problems can be related to power supply abnormalities, overloaded operation, loose electrical connections, insufficient lubrication, or mechanical resistance.
Check the incoming voltage, wiring, motor protection devices, and transmission system. If the motor is overloaded, identify the mechanical cause rather than repeatedly resetting the protection device.
PLC or Control System Problems
If the machine cannot start automatically or the programmed cutting length is inaccurate, inspect the PLC, sensors, encoder, wiring, control switches, and parameter settings.
Clean sensors and check their installation position. Verify that the encoder provides stable length-measurement signals and that programmed parameters correspond to the actual production requirements.
Preventive Maintenance Recommendations
Regular cleaning, lubrication, alignment inspection, electrical checking, hydraulic maintenance, and fastener tightening are essential for reliable operation. Operators should record abnormal sounds, vibration, temperature, and forming quality to identify potential failures at an early stage.
Before maintenance, always disconnect the power supply and follow appropriate machine safety procedures. Repairs involving electrical, hydraulic, or mechanical systems should be performed by qualified personnel.
